Where Will STEM Education Be In 5 Years?

In 2015, there were nearly 8.6 million STEM jobs in the United States, and that number is growing every year. In fact, STEM job growth in the past 10 years is three times that of any other field, but by 2018, it is projected that 2.4 million STEM jobs will go unfilled. Policymakers, Education Organizations Increase Focus On STEM Graduates In The Workforce

Both policymakers and educational organizations are increasingly investing resources in building out the STEM graduate to industry pathway. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week a new initiative to double the number of CUNY graduates with tech-related bachelor’s degrees by 2022 and with $20 million worth of investment, according to a press release from the mayor’s office. And higher education institutions are also winning more grants to launch STEM-related programs, with Meredith College receiving $1 million from the National Science Foundation to launch the Advancing Women’s Education in STEM Scholars Program, which will provide financial aid to women based on merit and need, reports Campus Technology. PED To Adopt Science Standards ‘In Their Entirety’

After facing an onslaught of opposition, New Mexico’s Public Education Department officials on Wednesday decided to adopt the Next Generation Science Standards “in their entirety” with just six state-specific standards, well short of the 35 additions the agency proposed last month. After-School Program Seeks To Bring Environmental Education To Diverse Communities

LEAP is an environmentally focused after-school program for elementary students that kicked off at Monarch Academy earlier this month. That chant will start off every session of the program, which is run by Our Creeks & Conservancy, an Annapolis nonprofit with the goal of engaging and educating diverse communities about environmental conservation and sustainability.     This topic is interesting to determine how the field of STEM employment will grow over the next five years. When we project of what careers will grow, as a culture we evaluate the need. We see the push for students to learn STEM from kindergarten on up. It’s all of these community engagement initiatives, and breakout groups in schools for students to develop an interest and love for S-T-E-M. With that said, the demand for instructors is bound to grow to keep teacher student ratio low, and to keep engagement and retention high. When we speak of money verse culture, that is merely opinion based. All though teachers love what they do, the fact remains that money is the primary reason for employment. Thing that can translate into money, (like time) could be a substitute or encouragement to go into a field. IE teachers who teach a stem subject can accrue an extra day per month; If tangible money is not something the administration would like to offer. When policymakers make initiatives to support jobs for career growth, there must be proven outcomes with examples and current data that support the facts behind career and job selection and degree specifications. Bill Nye has been around for a while and the curiosity of science has always been present. However, the attachment to science and being able to have a lasting sustainable career where not apart of his (bill Nye’s) subject or narrative. Leadership is important on all levels. Teacher student relationship, relationships from community to our young people. It is important to lead by example. Foster sustaining relationships and lead by example. If this generation has a desire to initiate a love for STEM so current students can join the field we must make clear pathways with proven results, lead by example, and provide finances that help create these possibilties
