Teaching with technology (revisited)

online learningIn case you haven’t seen it yet, the July issue of Science Scope is themed around technology. We seem to think that technology means new cool tools, but I heard a social studies teacher define it as  “the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes” and “tools and strategies that people use to solve problems.” He was teaching a unit on inventions, comparing the industrial revolution to the digital one. His students compared the telegraph and Morse code to the technology of texting and the “code” used to communicate.

Recently, on Twitter I saw a link to A Tale of Two Worlds: Old School, New School This infographic lists tools used in classrooms over the years from overhead projectors to smart phones.

Although it would be fun to nostalgically stroll down memory lane (I could add 16mm projectors, filmstrips, record players, and mimeograph machines to the list of extinct technologies that I used), it’s more important to reflect on the “practical purposes” that these technologies serve and which comes first—the purpose or the tool?

Do we invent tools to serve a need (doing things better), as in replacing overhead projectors with interactive boards for teacher presentations? Or do we invent a practical use for a new cool tool (doing better things)? I’m thinking of how in a short time iPads and smart phones have found a a place in the classroom as communication tools, as substitutes for other media, and for applications that didn’t exist a few years (or months) ago.

The laptops of today will eventually join the museum, along with floppy disks and VCRs. There is one item on the list that I hope never exists—the robot teacher. Although, if a teacher can be replaced by a robot, perhaps he or she should be! It’s interesting to see the percentage of teachers who have embraced social networking for professional learning and communications—applying a tool to a purpose.

Speaking of social networking, join in on Tuesday evenings (8–9 pm Eastern) to #scichat on Twitter. Last week’s online tweetchat was an amazingly focused conversation on project-based learning in science with many educators sharing their experience and expertise (and links to relevant online resources). #nstachat occurs on a less frequent basis, but the conversations also focus on a specific topic. It’s interesting how these social networking sites have morphed from “here’s what I had for dinner” to highly engaging opportunities for professional communications.

This article talks about how technology can be used in classrooms. Teachers should often use technology as a way of engaging students in the classroom. Textbooks will soon be replaced by laptops, and students will have a wide variety of things to explore by using the newly developed technology. As long as human teachers don’t be replaced by robotic teachers, then they will have to use technology as a learning tool.

The wonder world of technology! This article takes you into the future and introduces some new tools we may possibly be using in the classroom. Books would be the thing of the past and be replaced by I pads and smart phones. Teachers would be also given an upgrade as they might be replaced with robot teachers. The common technology we know today would eventually join a museum as we stride to the future. I don’t know about you but i can’t to be using I pads for books instead of carrying around all these books.

This article speaks about the wonders of technology and how it is replacing everything in the classrooms today. This article takes you into the future and into the past with every single piece of technology that has been invented from years before , in today’s world and into the future. I will surely enjoy caring around i pads than heavy books.

This article “Teaching With Technology (Revised) “, is is showing how teaching in the classroom has changed over time and how it is still constantly changing.Technology used in the classrom is vastly changing. Just a few years ago teachers still used projectors to present to the class, but now technology is so updated that promethean board,s that allow you to interact with your presentations are out and in almost every classroom. I agree with there writer where she wrote that she hopes that new technology doesn’t doesnt bring about robot teachers. All in all, I feel that this is a very interesting article.

The article talks about technology and its different uses. The world of technology is a fascinating thing to explore. Like the article said all of these new things that seems new to us is gong be old to the new generation of children. Well for now the technology that we have will be use for modern classes are helping us communicate and learn. It is good to have technology because adults, teens, and even kids are bonding with technology. Without technology the world would still have cavemen. Overall the article makes lots of sense and shows us the reality of technology.

Technology have improve the world today and even made it more advance but it has also affect iy in some ways. This article introduce you to the future and new invention of technology people will use at work or at school.Robots will replace the educators which means teachers will not be able to interact with the pupils and diplay or interacted their presentations.I don’t think its a good idea that robots will replace teachers. They will need a job to help there family and how will the robot know if the students understand or not ? Students using notepads and new technology invention as there books its a very interesting opinion but the students will not review there notes if there on laptops and notepads they can get easily distracted from the enternet .Many child in this world today don’t even read books anymore.Technology is vanishing the past history .I would walk with books in my bag to school than to walk with a notepad. Educators should not replace from not robots i rather having a human being teaching me than a human .Many teachers will know whether i understand or i don’t and they will be willing to help me . Technology have improved the world but its also destorying the world.

The article talks about how technology can be used to improve the knowledge of students. i think it would be a bad idea because instead of doing work children would rather facebook or twitter, to me personal that would be a form of distraction. And the thought of replacing robots for teach not so good, robots weren’t made with brains, on the other hand thats a NO NO.

This article I can relate too. Technology is indeed finding its way into the education system. New world technology does replace old tech because we want to see new cool things. The new tech we call now will end up in museum in the future like the article say. For the part where teachers are replaced with robots I don’t think we will ever be ready for that because its a bad idea. No matter how strict, boring, and unappreciative they are replacing them wouldn’t be nice. Technology although with its problems is bonding with everyone. Overall I know these things stated will happen.

    TO REPLACE THE FIRST ONE:

I that teaching with technology is good because in these times no one has the time to be writing in a book every day. Istead of writing, its better and easier to press buttons. With technology a student can understand things more and it will give students many more options to learn and research. Their are many new technologies in the world and more are comming out each day and it helps us although we are getting lazy. The part of replacing teachers with robots is insane bacause i robot wont have the ability to know everyone in its class name, it would not know how to go over a concept a student did not understand, it would not have the emotion to relate to its student, how would would it answer a question when asked . The list goes on and on, robots are not humans they can not be a teacher.

I can really relate to this article. Technology is among many of the students today so why not use it to further learning? Teaching with technology would make lives for students and teachers much easier. Also, inventions such as the DVD and many others of today would soon be placed in museums because technology always have something new and better everyday! I can really see more teachers teaching with techology to help the students to learn more.

This article is all about the future. It tells us how fast we are currently moving into the future with resources of learning. It explains how even technology like the Ipad iPhone and interactive promethian board have revolutionized the time we are in now. It explains how technology may one day replace the teachers all at once with robots! This article gives excitement and expectations for the future we are headed to where devices like even the HD tv or a laptop in the museums with the she and the rest of the old technology.

This article is pretty cool. It’s basically talking about technology and how it have change over the year. This article is also introducing us to the new tools of technology in the future. Technology is so rapidly changing they can even replace teachers with robots. But the only thing bad about replacing the teachers with robots is that we would not be able to ask the robots questions. Well, all of these new tools will help the students learn faster too because students love technology so yea!!! Great article!

In this modern and ever changing society technology has improved and raised our standard of lving and also made tasks much easier than they were when technology wasnt introduced. As the article clearly shows the new technology that we boast about today will be classified as nothing in future generations to come. However the future ahead puts all our technology into the museums because new inventions will outshine them. The article clearly shows that we will be using more computerized equipments such as the ipad, smart phone and so forth to replace our textbooks. The idea about teachers being replaced with robots will be cool and interesting because in order for you to know if it will work out you have to experience it for yourself.Technology has its ups and downs but we must admit that the pros of technology outruns the cons. After all, this article is very true and its time we start preparing for what the future has in store.

Goodbye books, projecters, chalkboard and hello laptops, dvd players and pormethean boards. Technolgy technolgy technolgy!!! Technolgy is so advanced in this world today and getting more advanced. I like this article because it speaks about how technolgy is affecting the world and classrooms, have you ever noticed that a student learns faster and funner with a computer than with a textbook. the faster they replace books with computers the more students will be able to succeed. So teachers throw away thoose old dusty books and bring in new computers and you will see how much students make it on the honor roll.

This article mainly talks about how far technology came from and were it will be in the near future. This article also talks about how this new technology helps to make people’s lives more easier. I think that with new technology coming out everyday that our society can be much educated and knowledgeable about the world and the technology soon to come.
I have to kinda disagree about the whole robot teaching thing. I personally think that you would probably learn, but not in a fun an active environment. Because how can you get a robot to make the lesson you are learning about fun and the robot would probably have glitches. It might also not be able to communicate with the students, but with technology going the way it is it just might be able to happen.

This article is mainly focused on how technology will improve as we get closer to the future. It also talks about how the technology we have today will be out into a museum because people are making newer versions of everything.I would not like the fact of having a robot teacher. I do agree that technology will soon be the resource that everyone will turn to in the future.

This article summarizes the role that technology plays in the learning environment. I think using more forms of modern technology in classrooms would be a marvelous idea to implement! Having iPads for each student would definitely make writing and copy notes easier because some people, like myself, type faster than they write manually. Of course there must be measures in place to prevent students from stealing or using the technology for the wrong purpose but that can be remedied when the issue arises. This article also made me think about how the things we find “innovative” and “revolutionary” today would seem trivial in the future society. Technology is always changing so classrooms should get with the times. As for having robot teachers, America is already having a job crisis so, for now, leave the teaching to the humans.

This article is basically talking about technology and how it is affecting the future. It explains how technology has changed classrooms from the past to now. Before you know it, you wont need teachers to be in the front of a classroom teaching, there will be robots. You wouldn’t even need copybooks. Laptops are going to take the place of those copy books. Technology will take over the world.

This article “Teaching with technology” is one that really catches my eye. When i was younger i always believed that one day all schools would have some kind of high tec screen installed in our desks so that we can just type and look up everything at our desks and email homework and save work, and of course it would have its little faults like blocking sites like: facebook, myspace, etc. blah blah bla! But we aren’t that far into technology which is a bummer. But i still believe it can happen. I feel that we should be able to bring our kindles, ipads, tabs, laptops, etc.. to school, because 100 desks with computers canno fill 900+ students. And becuase everything is electronic i think it should really be enforced. But no where in my dreams and beliefs had thoughts of robot teachers at all….my opions…

This article really talks about the role that technology plays today.Lots of things change why cant school regulations do the same. Inno dem teachers like the fact of a laptop in front of them in class easy to acess and use. Because it makes it easy for Them to their work. Well guess what? We feel the same way too. Like i said before using technology could really help and be benificial to alot of people in many different ways. And robot teachers yet again is a Big No!

This article is really on point! 😉

This article “Teaching with Technology” was actually very interesting; more interesting than “after the lab”.Actually that article wasn’t interesting at all.It was very boring and I dont think that students would want to read it a second time……But anyways, back to this article. This article talks about our everchanging technology. Technology is speeding up our world and not for the better. Inventions are created by problems. If i am having a problem and i need to find something to help me with that problem….i start to invent something. And soon museums will be filled with Ipads and Smartphones. Our children would laugh at the gadgets we once thought were cool. Our whole world will become computerized to point where we will no longer use actually dollar bills, but have computer chips implanted into us instead……Teacher Robots?….You have got to be kidding me!…

This article is basiclly about how technology has progressed through time and is now very accessable. With the way technologhy is now, almost anything is possible. Like the article said, just think of how a classroom would be if there was an iPad in it used as a commuication tool. That would be so cool and I hope that when schools DO start to use iPads and cell phones in classrooms that I will be there to say that I was part of history. And the part about the robot teacher sounds kind of scary.

This article is about Technology. Technology is always changing. I really think teaching with technology draws more students into what teachers are saying. Not every one likes turning pages in textbooks , but they would love using an iPad to read and whats not. I honestly would love to use an iPad in school , less books and clutter.

this article” teaching with technology”. to me this article tell me how the world is changing over times and improve because of technology. like in article said said student in the classroom use i pad as a object for school to make it easier for student learn and by having fun. i realized that technology helps us by making a good and clean environment, for example student who use i pad in class doesn’t have to use book so if it does have book it will not have paper flying all over the place. the robot part about teaching human seeing to me very impossible that it will happen and if it does i will think that the robot will try take over the world.

it’s amazing how fast technology is advancing in our community. We finding new and innovating ways to make life much easier. If that means replacing teachers with robots well….. Ok, so I’m kidding, but serious, someday, chalkboards might be a thing of the past. We might just be able to see our lesson right infront our face.

This article basically talks about how technology has brought a new era and has helped with the progress of learning. Soon enough, text books will soon be replaced by every device that a student uses on an everyday basis. It’s scary to think that there is a possibility of teachers loosing their jobs to robots. Though this article introduces how technology will change learning it also introduces different ways how teachers and students can use technology in their lesson plans to both bond and learn. Nevertheless, I am still grateful for technology!
